Addressing Barriers to Equitable Care

"I urge you to remember that Americans often grow impatient when they cannot see light at the end of the tunnel -when policies do not overnight usher in a new order. But politics is not magic." — President Lyndon B. Johnson, 1966

Taking Action Requires Addressing Barriers

We need early-detection guidelines that keep pace with advancement and reflect the needs of minority and disadvantaged populations; incentives that drive innovation in early detection and screening technologies; coverage of and access to early detection and screening technologies in private and public insurance plans; better measures for assessing impact of early detection; and screening in the minority community, and initiatives that promote community outreach and education.

Tell Congress: Prevent cancer deaths with early detection testing

We can prevent cancer deaths by catching cancer in its earlier stages. Congress is considering legislation - The Medicare MCED Screening Coverage Act (H.R. 1946/S. 1873) - that would create a pathway to Medicare coverage of early detection tests for cancer. Your congressmember holds significant influence over this decision. We need you to make your voice heard right now!

Equitable Cancer Care Deep Dive

When cancer is detrected early, nine of every ten cancer patients will live five years or longer. In 2021, NMQF launched its MCED site to help educate health leaders, policy makers and individuals on the essentials of early detection.

Support the Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act

This bill provides for Medicare coverage and payment for multi-cancer early detection screening tests that are approved by the Food and Drug Administration and that are used to screen for cancer across many cancer types. The Government Accountability Office must report on the resulting utilization and effectiveness of such tests. Help us take action with your local officials.

Early diagnosis is vital to efforts to improve cancer survival rates.

Today’s cancer screening technologies, while effective, are limited to a handful of cancers. Multi-cancer early detection tests, which use a single blood draw to identify many different cancers before symptoms develop, are an astounding innovation in accuracy, accessibility and efficiency that fundamentally reduces patient risk for avoidable morbidity and mortality.

Coordinating the strategy

A coordinated strategy is required to minimize barriers to FDA approval and to access. The Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act is an essential component of that strategy.

Cancer Support Community

"CSC has joined other leading cancer and health equity organizations to
urge Congress to support a bipartisan bill called the Medicare Multi-Cancer
Early Detection Screening Coverage Act (H.R. 1946/S. 1873). This bill would
create a new coverage pathway, giving people on Medicare access to new,
breakthrough screening technologies that detect cancer at earlier stages."

American Cancer Society

“The Medicare Multi Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act would potentially expand access to cancer screenings in Medicare. Under the legislation, once the test has been approved by the FDA, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services could initiate an evidence-based coverage process to determine coverage when clinical benefit is shown. ACS CAN supports The Medicare Multi Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act to ensure prompt coverage of innovative new early detection tests. Cancer screening and early detection are key priorities for ACS CAN.”

Susan G. Komen

The Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act (S.1873/H.R. 1946) is bipartisan legislation that ensures Medicare beneficiaries have coverage for these innovative tests that show the promise of detecting multiple types of cancer in one test before symptoms develop. This bill aligns developments in science with Medicare coverage by providing the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) the authority to cover bloodbased multi-cancer early-detection tests and future test methods, once they are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)."
